The TOUR Transalp is one of the most famous and challenging road bike stage races for amateur cyclists in Europe. This year, the 2024 TOUR Transalp led from Lienz in East Tyrol to Riva del Garda over some of the most impressive mountain passes in the Alps, including the Passo Falzarego, Passo Pordoi and Passo Fedaia.
The TOUR Transalp is more than just a race; it is an adventure, a personal challenge and an experience to remember. We asked Maxi Ebert about his experience of the Transalp.
What was your motivation to compete in the TOUR Transalp?
Maxi Ebert: As a passionate cyclist, I'm always looking for new challenges to test myself. I rode the Transalp in 2022 and I thought it was a great event that gives you that professional feeling. A stage race through the Alps that feels a bit like the Giro d'Italia. Seven days of racing through a fantastic landscape - what could be better?
What did taking part mean to you personally?
Maxi Ebert: As my passion for cycling is a big part of my life, a race like this is naturally very important to me. For me personally, it's a bit of an escape from the daily grind and a distraction from everything so that I can concentrate better on everyday things afterwards.
What were the highlights of the race for you?
Maxi Ebert: In a race like this, you go through highs and lows, through great suffering and pain. But also great relief and success. In addition to the impressive scenery that you see during the tour, the team spirit also plays a big role for me. I had a very strong partner in my team mate Max, because, as we all know, a problem shared halved. Of course, the finish of each stage was a highlight, but reaching the feed points of our support team was also a big highlight every time. With this in mind, many thanks to my father Kurt, who looked after us all week, and to my girlfriend Jana, who was with us for the first few days.
What were the low points?
Maxi Ebert: During the race, you often have a lot of time to think and you ask yourself why. Why so much sweat and suffering? But I have to say that every second and every drop of sweat was worth it.
Is there anything you can take away from this experience for your everyday working life?
Maxi Ebert: I think there are some parallels. Just like in cycling, there are always ups and downs to overcome in your job. Not everything always comes easily. In my opinion, the biggest similarity I see between sport and working life is the ambition to persevere through the toughest times.
